The Water Bowl Practice - A Mindfulness Activity

Writer's picture: Changa BellChanga Bell

Disturbed water, still at rest in the depths below.
Water Bowl Practice

Materials needed: A clear bowl of water

  1. Fill a clear bowl with water and place it on a stable surface

  2. Gently disturb the water with your finger

  3. Observe three phases:

    • The active ripples (representing busy thoughts/mindsets.)

    • The gradual settling (transition phase.)

    • The still clarity (representing mind state.)

  4. Notice how:

    • Each disturbance is temporary

    • Clarity is the water's natural state

    • The deeper water remains undisturbed

  5. Reflection questions:

    • What mindsets (surface movements) am I carrying today?

    • What is my deeper mind state beneath these temporary patterns?

    • How can I access that deeper clarity while engaging in daily activities?
